Both Insurance Deadlines Met
Andrew Berman’s Kentfield home is a classic Marin County cedar-shake-and-brick build, the kind of property that defines the area’s character. But in the wake of California’s tightening wildfire underwriting standards, his insurance carrier delivered a hard ultimatum: replace both the main house and pool house roofs before policy renewal, or the policy gets cancelled.
The timeline was tight. The first compliance deadline landed in early February. A second, harder deadline followed on May 4th. Walking away from coverage wasn’t an option, and finding a new carrier mid-wildfire-season with a non-compliant cedar shake roof would have been worse.
"I had 8 weeks. Clean Roofing was incredibly professional and responsive, and got the job on time."
What started as a roof replacement quickly evolved. After the new Class A roof went on, the carrier’s underwriters reviewed the file again and flagged a secondary concern: the home’s untreated cedar shingle siding. To keep the policy, the siding needed fire-retardant treatment too. We took on phase two without missing a beat.
Two hard insurance dates Clean Roofing had to clear:
Early Feb 2026
Initial policy renewal, required Class A fire-rated roof in place on main residence.
May 4 2026
Secondary underwriting review, required fire-retardant treatment of all cedar shake siding.
Presidential TL Solaris in Country Grey set against the original red brick base and newly sealed cedar shake.
We sequenced the work to match the underwriter’s review schedule, getting the high-priority Class A roof on first, then returning to clean, repair, and fire-treat every square foot of cedar shake siding before the May 4 deadline.

Dimensional shingle profile and rejuvenated cedar work side by side, the spec that satisfied underwriting.
The most satisfying part of the project: from the street, nothing looks “replaced.” The cedar reads warm, the roof reads quiet, and the architecture reads intact. That’s the whole point.
